Change is good. Shave your head.

6/18/2014

I've shaved my head three times now. Okay, rather a very close buzz - but still, quite a noticeable change from my typical coiffed style.

And not my most flattering look, to be sure.

But I say, "Why not?!"

(pictures after the fold)

My first time was in 2010, on a balcony at the edge of the Earth overlooking nearly a 270 degree view of the Pacific Ocean:

Maybe I was drunk from the view
Letting go of the very real attachment that many of us know as our hair is not an easy decision for most people. It wasn't for me either. Actually, maybe it is easy for most; it's often not even on the table.

But I'm glad I did.

Then I painted a terrible watercolor of the scene as that night's Tonight's Watercolor:
Post by Tonight's Watercolor.
Later, friends and I got dressed up for the opening of Alice in Wonderland 3D:
Alice in Wonderland

My second buzzing was a year later, in 2011 at the camp where I enjoyed a summer as a ropes course and rock climbing facilitator. We decided the team needed matching Mohawks. And that was that.

After some much needed cleaning up, we went to the beach:

It was okay, after all.

So now just last week, nearly three years later, I did my third buzzing, alone and unceremoniously in my apartment bathroom here in Korea.

And Lianne seems to like it (or at least not mind) - not nearly as much as one might mind these bright red and matching Korea World Cup soccer shirts and socks that her sister got us. (Not my taste, but "couple set" outfits are a thing here.)
Lianne and Me
As for the hair, obviously the decision to buzz it gone was the hardest back in 2010. The first time.

It always is.

But it's good to challenge our ego every so often. Embrace the fear of looking like an idiot.

And let it go.

Of course, buzzing your hair is not one of those tremendous life risks. (Well, maybe society makes it a little more so for our female friends).

Still, hair grows back.

Point being, it's not a stretch to suppose that the bigger risks (and rewards) tend to flow from first taking these early and less significant ones.

And that's my point. Naturally.

Small victories first.
Only if you've done it yourself can you appreciate the freedom in taking a buzzing clipper to the middle of your forehead - feeling that first chunk fall away.
Good news for you is you don't actually need to shave your head to make a change.

Adam's grateful his 20s were a debt-free decade traveling with intention through work with meaning.
Some of that work includes TOMS, The White House, teaching abroad, experimenting with art and business in the Gift Economy, and two proud terms of national service with AmeriCorps.
We have got to reform student loan debt for all.

Haha looks great Adam! I completely understand the feeling ... when I boy-cut my hair (I didn't shave my head but it was a very short pixie), I had that great "this might be a mistake but ahh screw it" feeling :)

Thanks Melanie. It is a good feeling. And your hair works for you. I have a hard time picturing you now with long hair. Have a photo?

Haircut and shirt look good. Not sure about the socks!

Actually, the socks are the best part; they're quick drying and insulated for mountain hiking or so and so.
