DVORAK vs QWERTY
It's time to make the switch.
We're all familiar with the QWERTY keyboard layout, but did you know that it was designed to slow down our typing speed? Yes, intentionally. Because the arms of old mechanical typesetters used to frequently get stuck and jam.
It has since been practically proven that the DVORAK keyboard layout - in which consonants and vowels alternate between the left and right hand in a layout based on the most frequently used letters in our lexicon - is an incredibly more efficient means of typing.
I mean, come on, the semi-colon is one of the HOME KEYS on our QWERTY layout. The semi-colon!
A S D F J K L ;
I love the semi-colon more than most people; I am a staunch supporter of the semi-colon. (See what I did there?)
I think the semi-colon is not used enough; still, it doesn't belong in the HOME KEYS row.
Of course, thinking that we would all just switch over to this new keyboard layout in short order would be madness. Chaos would ensue. I know.
So we've got to start with the kids... Always the kids.
I propose that students learning computers now, (what is it Kindergarten, 1st grade?) be introduced to the DVORAK keyboard layout. (Maybe QWERTY as well, for a short time, as we transition. The kids can handle two; those elastic brains do amazing things with new languages.)
Yes, it might take a decade of awkwardness for one of our generations, but imagine the efficiency that can unfold in the typing world for our children's fingers, and generations beyond them, once we get over that hump.
Not to forget the health effects, decreased arthritis and the like. (Look it up.)
I'm imploring you to see the possibility and BELIEVE in a better typing future.
And what the heck, with the way AI is advancing, in 20 years we might not be typing anymore anyway... all in time.
We shall see.
There's plenty on this topic. Enjoy a gander through a quick Google search and judge for yourself.
...And won't you let me know what you think about this below? I'd love to chat about it.
Have you tried to learn DVORAK yourself?
